It’s now been just over two months since we left Mission Beach and we may not have kept the blog up to date but believe me, we have been collecting stories to retell later. I won’t go too much into detail because now that we are living the roadtrip life again things are a lot calmer and we have more days to sit and write and reflect, as well as days to fill with free activities because New Zealand is much more expensive than the adventure-a-minute lifestyle we were leading in Vietnam. Expect articles to flow.
So I’ve hinted as to where we’ve been, having left stunning Mission Beach on 14 February bound for Bali we spent a couple of weeks on the famed Indonesian island, before skipping across to mainland Asia landing in Vietnam. Before heading to Vietnam, we had talked to a lot of backpackers about their time in Asia and all said that Vietnam was their favourite, so we thought we were in for a treat – we were not disappointed. From scaling waterfalls, to dining with monks, racing around the countryside on motorbikes and trying to cross the busy streets of major cities. We travelled by road from Saigon to Hanoi over one month and can’t wait to share with you some of the pictures we took and places we visited.
I was also extremely happily surprised to find that travelling Vietnam with a shellfish allergy was not at all the horror I thought it was going to be. After my culinary adventures in Vietnam I have a whole new outlook on this allergy I’m stuck with, and how to travel with it, live with it and become braver with my menu options.
When our visas expired we flew back to Darwin, Australia to enjoy a holiday that we had won online. With big thanks to Turu, Brits and the NT tourism board we were treated to a week in a giant Brits luxury campervan, scenic flights above Kakadu and Katherine Gorge plus accommodation vouchers to use at selected caravan parks. It. Was. Incredible. We’ve fallen head over heels for the Northern Territory and can’t wait to go back.
That brings you pretty much up to date. After Darwin we flew to Auckland, New Zealand where we bought a campervan (she’s called chicitita and is about 1/6 of the size of the motor home we drove in Darwin) and have been on the road in the northern part of New Zealand’s north island for two weeks now. We’re currently parked up at Ocean Beach in Whangerei heads For a couple of nights while we await a mechanics appointment for chicitita.
In short, it’s been a whirlwind couple of months and our absence online is not a lack of love or caring – just downtime. It’s something that we plan to now rectify!
Travel safe peeps, and stay tuned…
